What is International Men’s day and why do we celebrate it?
Most of us aren’t very familiar with this day, yet it’s one of the most meaningful events of the year. International Men’s Day began in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago and is now celebrated in more than 80 countries.
It’s a global movement that shines a light on the challenges men face including mental health, family roles, abuse, and wellbeing, while celebrating their positive impact in our communities every 19th of November.
This year’s theme, “Supporting Men and Boys,” reminds us that strength also means openness, vulnerability, and connection.
We often picture men as strong, independent, and stoic. Yet behind that strength, they too experience stress, emotional strain, and loneliness. It’s time to make space for conversations about men’s health and wellbeing, physical and emotional, without judgement or stigma.
Now is the perfect time to bring that awareness forward.

Conversations that Matter
To explore how people view International Men’s day, we spoke with a few individuals from different walks of life. Their insights highlight why open dialogue and community support matter.
Peter Fazackerley – College Instructor
1. How does International Men’s Day help raise awareness for men’s wellbeing?
“Makes men aware of the help they can get regarding mental health.”
2. What does a positive male role model look like to you?
“Someone who is passionate, happy, willing to give and accept advice, and forgiving.”
3. How can we better support men and boys in our community?
“By talking about how they are feeling.”
Aleksandar Vaz – Chef and Content Creator
1. How does International Men’s Day help raise awareness for men’s wellbeing?
“In my opinion, for some reason I don’t feel that it reaches people in the way it should. It’s about how the message is spread.”
2. What does a positive male role model look like to you?
“A positive male role model to me is someone who constantly evolves into being a good person, someone who respects himself and others, and has faith in God. Someone who shows that it’s okay to face life’s challenges.”
3. How can we better support men and boys in our community?
“We can support men and boys in many ways. There should be a meeting place where men can speak their thoughts without being judged and receive guidance to improve their day to day lives. Many men grow up without fathers or male guidance and can end up seeking advice from the wrong people. Sharing stories of strength and faith, even through the Bible, can inspire men to find hope. Exercise and healthy food choices also play a big part.”
Don Gerard – International Student
1. How does International Men’s Day help raise awareness for men’s wellbeing?
“IMD hosts events like health checkups, workshops, and forums to promote positive health behaviours and open conversations about mental and physical health.”
2. What does a positive male role model look like to you?
“Leading by example and uplifting others through their actions.”
3. How can we better support men and boys in our community?
“By always asking how they are or how they feel. We often assume men and boys are emotionally strong, but they also need understanding, empathy, and someone to listen.”
